Sandur
A hill town in Ballari district, once called Skandapuri and ruled for nearly four centuries by the Maratha Ghorpade family, whose 1930s palace stands on the road into town. Its hills are counted among the oldest exposed rock formations in the world; it sits in the iron-ore belt, with the Narihalla gorge and the Kumaraswamy temple (about 10 km away) nearby.
